Days after the Kansas City Chiefs played in yet another Super Bowl, the team’s quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a loss that was far more devastating: his beloved grandfather Randy.

Patrick’s Grandfather Passes Away

Patrick’s mother Randi took to Instagram on Friday to reveal the tragic news that her father Randy had passed away.

“Hard to find the words of holding my fathers hand as he goes to Heaven,” Randi wrote alongside a photo of herself with her father. “I know heโ€™s in a better place.”

“I love you daddy,” she added. “Well done, good and faithful servant! Matthew 25:23.”

Randy Had Been In Hospice

Last month, we reported that Randi had taken to social media to reveal that her father had entered hospice care. This came just two days before the Chiefs took on the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game. Though this was undoubtedly weighing heavily on Patrick’s mind, he was still able to lead his team to victory and help earn them a spot in the Super Bowl.

Randy celebrated his 78th birthday earlier in January. While Randi had long documented her dad’s health struggles on social media, she never specifically revealed what he was suffering from. Instead, she frequently used social media to ask for prayers and love for her ailing father.

Back in September, Randi posted a photo of herself watching the Chiefs play with her dad as he lay in what looked to be a hospital bed.

“Prayer warriors please pray for my daddy,” she wrote alongside that post. “He is in the hospital and is not well.”

Randy Was ‘Hanging On’ To Watch The Super Bowl

During the NFL Honors in New Orleans on February 6, Randi told People Magazine that her father was “hanging on” in the hopes of watching Patrick and the Chiefs play in the Super Bowl against the Eagles. This was just three days before the big game.

Randi said at the time that while her dad had his bad days, “the one thing that he remembers” is when the Super Bowl is. A true American!

“I know that it has meant a lot to him,” she said. “And I think he’s hanging on because he wants to see his grandson do an amazing thing or just let him play.”

“I mean, he must be such a proud grandpa, so proud,” she added. “And my mom was very proud and his other grandparents [were too].”

Since Patrick was understandably extremely busy in the days leading up to the Super Bowl, Randi didn’t want to “bug him” too much with updates about his grandfather’s health. Indeed, the family clearly didn’t want Patrick to be distracted, given the stakes of the Super Bowl. However, Randi made sure to text Patrick updates here and there, especially that his grandfather was “watching and excited” for the big game.

Patrick’s Difficult Super Bowl

Sadly, the Chiefs ended up coming up short to the Eagles by a score of 40-22. Afterwards, Patrick described losing the Super Bowl as “the worst feeling in the world,” adding that the feeling “will stick with you the rest of your career.”

Losing his grandfather so soon after such a devastating Super Bowl defeat must be unimaginably difficult for Patrick. Please join us in saying a prayer for Patrick and his family during this tragic time.
