Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has been booked into the Smith County Jail in Texas after allegedly violating the terms of his probation by consuming alcohol, according to multiple reports.
The 55-year-old former Major League Baseball pitcher — who played for teams including the Texas Rangers, Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets — was taken into custody on Tuesday, exactly two years after his original DWI arrest. That arrest had marked his third such violation.
The elder Mahomes accepted a plea deal for his arrest which included agreeing to a five-year probation sentence with “intense” supervision for the first year.
Under Texas law, a third or subsequent DWI offense is a third-degree felony, which carried a potential sentence of 2 to 10 years in prison. And while a decade in prison had loomed large, Mahomes Sr. escaped with a favorable deal and probation.
Yet, somehow, he managed to violate the probation as the “intense” supervision caught him consuming alcohol, a violation.

Mahomes Sr. Jailed After SCRAM Ankle Monitor Flags Alcohol Use on Probation from 2024 DWI
The latest violation stems from an alleged alcohol consumption incident flagged by his SCRAM (Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor) ankle monitor, which reportedly registered a high reading on New Year’s Day.
Subsequent urine tests on January 5 and January 9 came back negative, per court documents cited in reports. But the violation has him possibly looking at significant jail time once again.
Smith County District Attorney Jacob Putman confirmed the probation breach to local outlets, noting that Mahomes Sr. could face up to 10 years in prison if the violation is upheld. No hearing date has been set, and he can challenge the allegations.

The 2024 DWI arrest drew significant attention as it happened just days before Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs competed in (and won) Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. Bodycam footage from the arrest captured Mahomes Sr. expressing distress over the timing, saying things like, “My son is getting ready to play in the f—ing Super Bowl.”
He even tried laying a guilt trip on officers over the arrest.
“Now, this s*** going to be on the news which is going to f*** with him, and it’s probably going to f*** him up,” Papa Mahomes said. “And he probably won’t win the Super Bowl. But that’s fine. If that’s what y’all want to do, that’s good.”

In a sign that he hadn’t learned his lesson, Mahomes Sr. celebrated his “intense” supervision deal as an opportunity to attend his son’s games in the future.
“It’s kind of a tradition; I normally go to all the football games. I know he enjoys me being there, so hopefully things will work out and I’ll be able to continue what I’ve been doing,” Mahomes said.
Maybe you should stop doing what you’ve been doing. Now, attending future games may again be in jeopardy.
Mahomes Sr. was given a pretty good deal considering it was his third DWI. The two other incidents took place in 2018 and 2012. The 2018 charges led to a guilty plea and the elder Mahomes was sentenced to 40 days in jail which was served on weekends.
He keeps being handed opportunity after opportunity with light sentences. Let’s hope one day he actually seizes on those opportunities and cleans up his life.
