Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is off to a dreadfully slow start this season.
He followed up a three-catch for 34 yards performance during his team’s NFL opener against the Baltimore Ravens with an even worse one-catch for 5 yards performance against the Cincinnati Bengals in week two.
ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith took a jab at Kelce and used a thinly veiled reference to Taylor Swift in his commentary, noting that the season has begun. And the “honeymoon’s over”.
Smith suggests that Chiefs fans need to see more of their player’s production on the field than they do of his pop star girlfriend.
“We saw more of Taylor Swift than we saw of Travis Kelce yesterday, on a Sunday afternoon,” Smith quipped during a segment on First Take.
Travis Kelce Hearing It From Critics
Most fans probably aren’t surprised by Travis Kelce’s slow start. He went on a whirlwind tour with Taylor Swift during the offseason, seemingly popping up everywhere.
Including on stage with her. So busting out of the gates at full throttle was likely wishful thinking. Even if he did just get a massive new contract.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen [Sunday],” Smith added of the star tight end’s performance. “We were supposed to see more of Travis Kelce yesterday than we saw of her [Swift]. That’s not happening though.”
“You’ve got to get going, you’ve got 39 receiving yards in the first two games. Come on now. Football season is here.”
“Honeymoon’s over. Let’s handle our business, OK,” he jabbed.
Kelce is currently the fifth-leading receiver on the Chiefs, behind leader Rashee Rice and even running back Isiah Pacheco.
Taylor Swift IS The Face Of The NFL
Honestly, Chiefs fans should be thrilled that they’ve managed to secure a 2-0 record against two tough opponents even with Travis Kelce playing a very limited role in the offense.
Imagine how dangerous they might be once he gets it rolling again.
With all that said, Smith’s point is understood but generally irrelevant. We are supposed to see more of Taylor Swift than anybody on Sundays. The NFL has decreed as such.
A league promotion just before week one showed the “Shake It Off” singer five separate times. Meanwhile, Kelce was squeezed in three times, and one of those was because he was locking lips with Swift.
This past weekend, NBC Sports managed to force a Taylor Swift mention in a game that had nothing to do with either her or Kelce, in the most annoying way possible.
Travis can go off this week with 12 catches for 188 yards and three touchdowns against the Falcons and he’s still going to be shown on camera less than his girlfriend.
And with that haircut, that might be a good thing.
