Tom Brady is known as one of the best quarterbacks of all time any way you cut it. While he looks back fondly at his NFL success, he’s now revealing the devastating toll that his football career has had on his body.
Specifically, his money makers: his hands.
Brady’s NFL Injuries
On Saturday, Brady took to his YouTube page to take part in a cooking challenge with chef and YouTuber Nick DiGiovanni. In their video, DiGiovanni said that he was impressed by Brady’s “chef hands.” He then asked Brady if there’s a correlation between “chef hands” and “football hands.” Brady responded to this by opening up about the permanent damage his NFL career has done to his hands.
“These fingers got pretty beat up over a long period of time. See that finger?” Brady said as he showed DiGiovanni his right middle finger. “Can’t even bend that finger anymore. Torn ligament.”
Brady went on to list out the injuries that his right hand has dealt with. These injuries include:
- Torn ligament in his middle finger.
- Torn ligament in his middle finger.
- Broken bone in ring finger.
- Palm “Ripped open” near his thumb.

Brady’s Worst Injury Of All
That last injury was the most serious hand injury by far. Brady sustained it when he accidentally hit a buckle on the helmet of his New England Patriots teammate Rex Burkhead. Indeed, the former Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer has never forgotten the day that Brady was hit with this injury.
“That was the Jacksonville like week two, remember when Tom split his thumb open? I’ll know, obviously,” Hoyer remembered just last month. “We’ll all never forget that, but for me with what my role was, it’s we’re in a group run and he bumps into Rex (Burkhead) and starts screaming bloody murder.”
Despite this, Brady was able to get back on the field just four days later for the AFC Championship Game. The injury was still a factor heading into Super Bowl LI back in 2017. Thankfully for Patriots fans everywhere, however, Brady was still able to lead his team to victory.

Brady’s Stiff Upper Lip
During his time playing in the NFL, Brady preferred not to talk about the injuries he faced.
“I never like to talk about injuries, I’m just a little bit old school in that way,” Brady told CBS News back in 2021. “You deal with them and you just make the most of them.”
Brady’s attitude about injuries inspired his fellow teammates to play through their own physical ailments. Back in December, the former Patriots fullback Jakob Johnson revealed that he once played through a broken shoulder blade thanks to Brady.
“My shoulder is hurting, I can’t move my arm,” Johnson recalled. “I’m thinking about going to the sideline, and Brady looks at me and is like, ‘Yeah, you okay, baby?!’”
“If Tom Brady asks you to get on up and get the score, that’s what you do,” he added.
Watch Johnson talk more about this in the video below.
This all serves as a reminder of the sacrifices our favorite NFL stars make for the sport they love. Here’s hoping that Brady isn’t in too much pain in his retirement years!
