Patrick Mahomes had to give his Kansas City Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce a geography lesson about Brazil’s distance from the U.S., despite Kelce having previously visited South America to support Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Argentina.
The funny comment comes as the team prepared for an 11-hour flight for their upcoming season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers in São Paulo.
Mahomes explained how team officials and the coaching staff had been preparing guys for the long journey. And how he himself had to spell things out for Kelce.
“I think more than anything it’s just explaining to some guys how far the trip was,” Mahomes said.
“Some guys didn’t understand how far the travel was. Travis, even though he was just down there last year, I was explaining to him how the globe works.”
The comment elicited laughter from reporters.
Patrick Mahomes never wasting an opportunity to poke fun at Travis Kelce, this time talking about traveling to Brazil this week 😂

Travis Kelce Joined Taylor Swift in South America
Travis Kelce traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 2023, to support his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, as she kicked off the South American leg of her Eras Tour.
He arrived just in time for her concert, where he was spotted in the VIP tent cheering her on alongside her father, Scott Swift.
During the performance of “Karma,” Taylor surprised fans by changing the lyrics to “Karma is the guy on the Chiefs coming straight home to me,” a direct nod to Kelce, who reacted with visible excitement and a big smile.
The flight to Argentina is actually longer than the one to Brazil. How Trav forgot the length of time it would be is beyond comprehension.
But then, maybe it was because he was flying for love the first time. Now he’s flying for work.

The Chiefs head to Brazil in the NFL’s latest attempt at Global Expansion
The Chiefs will kick off their 2025 NFL regular season against the Chargers in São Paulo on Friday, September 5, at Corinthians Arena. The game marks the second regular-season NFL game ever in the country and the league’s effort to expand globally.
The Chargers are the designated home team. The matchup will be streamed live and for free worldwide on YouTube, in an AFC West rivalry that the Chiefs have dominated recently.
Last season, the Green Bay Packers and the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles opened the NFL season in São Paulo, prompting several players to express concerns for their safety.
Players like cornerback Darius Slay (now with the Steelers) suggested their concerns weren’t just for their own safety, but also for the safety of family members who might be traveling with them.
“Man, it’s like one of them places where they probably won’t even let us leave (the hotel),” Slay said in a video posted on social media. “I told my family, ‘Do not come down there.’”
The NFL denied telling players that they should stay in their hotel when they get to Brazil, though several reports and comments from players refuted that.
Those safety concerns have been muted thus far this time around.
