On May 11, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made a commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kanas, where he made several controversial comments that have caused a big stir.
Butker’s speech lasted 20 minutes, but what he said has kept people talking for much, much longer. Some of the topics Butker discussed ranged from his takes on the LGBTQ+ community, working women, religion, and abortion. As you can imagine, he’s now under the microscope, because none of these topics are areas everyone can agree on.
Now, some have taken Butker’s comments to the next level and are demanding that the Chiefs remove their starting kicker and three-time Super Bowl champion from the roster altogether.
It’s gotten to the point where a fan started an online petition at Change.org to have Butker cut or traded from the team. As of this posting, the petition has received over 90,000 signatures and counting.
As the 14th-highest-paid kicker in the NFL, Butker is set to earn just over $4 million from the Chiefs this season. He ranked fourth in the NFL in FG%, making 94.2% of his kicks.
The Chiefs do not have another kicker on their 90-man roster, meaning Butker doesn’t appear to be in danger of losing his job any time soon, but as you can see, some wish he was no longer employed by the reigning Super Bowl champions.
