The Kansas City Chiefs are well-known for their dominance on the field, but it’s the team’s camaraderie off the field that truly sets them apart. As they gear up for another NFL season with hopes of a three-peat, the Chiefs took some time during training camp to indulge in a team-bonding tradition that involves everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure: pizza.

Patrick Mahomes, the superstar quarterback leading the charge, recently gave fans an inside scoop on what really goes down at these off-campus pizza parties. According to Mahomes, these outings are more than just a chance to fill up on carbs; they’re a critical part of building the team’s chemistry. “We always go [out to eat] a couple of times, and we take the guys, we get some pizzas…you just eat and joke around,” Mahomes shared.
But it wasn’t just all fun and games—there were some hilarious moments too. Ian Book, the Chiefs’ backup quarterback, found himself in a bit of a predicament during the first pizza outing. The offensive linemen, notorious for their hearty appetites, left Book with just one measly slice. “The first time we went, the O-Line—he only got one piece because the O-Line ate all his pizza,” Mahomes explained.

However, Book wasn’t about to let that happen twice. On the second trip, he came prepared, chowing down on a whopping nine slices. “I think Ian Book had like, nine pieces of pizza yesterday, man… I had to calm him down,” Mahomes said, clearly amused by his teammate’s determination.
While Mahomes playfully put Book on blast for his pizza consumption, it’s clear that these light-hearted moments are what help forge the strong bonds within the team. “Stuff like that is where you build that bond, and then you got those jokes and stuff for the rest of the year. That’s what builds the great culture we have,” Mahomes remarked.

As the Chiefs prepare to take on the Baltimore Ravens in their first game of the season, it’s this mix of hard work, humor, and camaraderie that will keep them strong. After all, a team that laughs together, wins together—just as long as they don’t overdo it on the pizza before hitting the field.
The Chiefs might be better than ever, but maybe they’ll take it easy on the pizza parties before game day. After all, as BroBible.com pointed out, “the last thing [Book] needs is to get his number called with nine slices of ‘za sitting in his stomach.”
