Former New York Jets head coach and foot afficionado Rex Ryan heavily criticized Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, accusing him of talking too much and not putting in the work to become a starter.
One of Shedeur’s biggest fans took notice. And she’s not too happy.
Pilar Sanders, mother of the Browns’ fifth-round draft choice, had some choice words for Ryan when she fired back on Instagram Stories, labeling his comments as “impotent, cancerous, envious energy.”
She went on to suggest that Ryan’s family and peers should be embarrassed.
“To young Athletes and Football fans… This is what impotent, cancerous, envious energy looks like,” she wrote. “This type of Evil goes waaay back – you can cut it with a knife – embedded in blood and bones, seeping through all of the rotting worm holes it has.”
“What and who does he really represent? Its family and peers should be embarrassed to know and let this on their platforms. There’s no room for this type in sports.”
Mama bear has been unleashed.
Should Shedeur Sanders be the embarrassment?
Pilar’s reference to Ryan being embarrassed is a direct counter to what the coach said about her son. Ryan’s criticism began after Shedeur expressed overconfidence in his abilities.
Sanders told ESPN Cleveland that he believed he could perform better than the league’s current starters. He said that despite being third on the Browns QB depth chart – he’d be fourth if not for Deshaun Watson’s injury status – and not getting a snap during garbage time of the team’s blowout losses.
Dillon Gabriel, who was drafted two rounds earlier than Sanders, received a few snaps in the Browns’ Week 2 41-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Gabriel saw a few more snaps at the end of their 34-10 defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos.
“This kid talks, and he runs his mouth. Like he said, ‘I can be a starting quarterback’ with his arms crossed like this. Get your a– in the front row and study and do all that. If I know, the whole league knows,” Ryan said during an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up.
“Quit being an embarrassment that way. You’ve got the talent to be the quarterback, you should be. You should be embarrassed that you’re not the quarterback now.”

Demanded NFL teams skip over him in the draft
Deion Sanders recently admitted that Shedeur explicitly told two NFL teams not to draft him this past April. He made the startling revelation during an appearance on the “New Heights” podcast with the Kelce brothers.
Shedeur informed the Ravens that he did not want to be selected with their 141st overall pick in the fifth round, as it would mean backing up Lamar Jackson for the duration of his rookie contract. He apparently told the Philadelphia Eagles something similar.
“How in the world can somebody fault him for thinking, ‘Why in the world would I go back up Lamar for 10 more years?’ Who comes in with that mindset?” Deion wondered. “Where do these guys come from that sit on these platforms and say, ‘You should’ve sat behind and learned the game and developed.’ When have the pros developed anybody?”
“I’ve never sat on the bench and said ‘I’ve learned a lot today.’ … Who learns sitting on the bench?”
Instead, he’s sitting on the bench in Cleveland, not learning from guys like Joe Flacco and Gabriel instead of honing his craft by watching Jackson or Jalen Hurts.
