Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski celebrated the opening of the Gronk Playground, a $2 million fully ADA-accessible facility on Boston’s Charles River Esplanade.

The park is designed for inclusive play and funded by his Gronk Nation Youth Foundation in partnership with the Esplanade Association and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

In a touching moment at the grand opening ceremonies, Gronkowski grew emotional as he talked about giving back to the community.

“Excuse me, you still have me moved. Wow,” Gronkowski told the crowd, seemingly surprised by his own tears as he wiped them away.

“I thought of the idea to give back to the Boston area for all the love and support the [region] of New England fans have shown me throughout my career,” he said.

Rob Gronkowski goes Gronk, Opens Park in Style

Now, that’s not to say Gronkowski didn’t deliver some of his epic goofball style antics when opening the Gronk Park. There was plenty of that.

The ceremony concluded with a playful agreement for Gronkowski to sign a one-day contract to retire as a Patriot, while the four-time Super Bowl champ emphasized the playground as a lasting legacy in Boston.

Oh, and there were duck boats. Which Gronkowski drove. And did donuts in.

Duck donuts.

He even delivered a few of his signature ‘Gronk spikes,’ though those weren’t very successful due to the playground’s matted surface.

“Doesn’t bounce that good on these floors,” the dejected future Hall of Famer said, explaining the weak attempt.

Gronkowski even went down the slide with the kids!

Better than his Fanatics Fest Appearance

The Gronk Playground features interactive elements like a football-shaped climbing structure, slides, swings, a splash deck, and scaled-down Boston landmarks that children can climb.

It also features a life-sized figure of Gronkowski at the entrance for high-fives.

The Tuesday morning event drew families, children from the Make a Wish Foundation and Hill House, Governor Maura Healey, Patriots owner Robert Kraft, Gronkowski’s family, and his longtime partner Camille Kostek.

The ceremonies went decidedly better than a few weeks ago, when at Fanatics Fest 2025 in New York City, Gronk reunited with Tom Brady and promptly engaged in a prank that turned into a total disaster.

Brady tossed a Lombardi Trophy to Gronkowski in a crowded hallway, attempting to recreate their iconic Super Bowl boat parade moment in 2021.

Gronkowski caught the trophy, but its base broke off upon impact, prompting gasps from onlookers.

“You broke it!” Brady shouted as he ran down the hallway to see how bad things were.

“I didn’t break it! You threw it way too hard!” Gronkowski fired back.

Brady suggested Gronk was “washed up.”

The playful banter is acceptable solely because this appears to be a replica of the Lombardi trophy. Had it been the real deal, the boys might not have been in such a joking mood.

Perhaps the new Gronk Playground should include a Lombardi Trophy tossing section.
