Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by Miami-Date police officers on his way to Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Hard Rock Stadium.
Videos from the scene showed Hill being pulled from his car and thrown on to the pavement after being stopped for a traffic violation. He was ultimately released and able to suit up in Miami’s win over the Jaguars.
But the situation is not anywhere near over. The Miami-Dade Police Department released bodycam footage of the incident on Monday. To say that it is not a great look for the department would be a vast understatement.
It sure looks like the officers were the aggressors. The video also shows Hill’s teammate Calais Campbell showing up to the scene. He was also detained and handcuffed.
Miami-Dade Police Department Under Fire After Tyreek Hill Incident
One of the officers at the scene has been put on administrative duties pending an internal investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, Hill talked about what happened after Sunday’s game.
“Right now, I’m still trying to put it all together … I still don’t know what happened,” Hill said. “But I do want to use this platform to say, ‘What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?’ Worst-case scenario, you know? … Everybody has bad apples in every situation, but I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on my end and Miami-Dade and do something positive for the community.
“It’s hard. I don’t want to bring race into it, but sometimes it gets kind of iffy when you do. What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill? Lord knows what those guys would have done. I just wanted to make sure I was doing what my uncle always told me to do whenever you’re in a situation like that — put your hands on the steering wheel and just listen.”
