The hockey world is still in shock after the tragic deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, who were both killed in a biking accident in New Jersey last month.
As reported by Outkick, the driver, Sean M. Higgins, is facing multiple charges, including two counts of death by auto and driving under the influence.
Higgins, who has made several virtual court appearances, was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.87, above the legal limit of 0.8 in New Jersey.
He admitted to drinking “five or six beers” before getting behind the wheel. While his defense attorney argued that he was a loving father who made a terrible mistake, the judge ruled that Higgins would be held until trial, where he faces up to 20 years in prison.
In a heart-wrenching development, Gaudreau’s widow, Meredith, revealed at his memorial service that she is pregnant with their third child. According to Bounding Into Sports, Meredith shared that the pregnancy came as a “total surprise” but brought immense joy to Johnny before his untimely death.

“John was beaming and so excited,” she said during the service. The couple, who had been married for less than three years, were already parents to two young children: Noa, their nearly two-year-old daughter, and a baby boy born earlier this year.
Higgins remains in custody as the case progresses, with no bail set, underscoring the severity of the charges. As the Gaudreau family grieves and prepares for the arrival of new life, the sports community continues to rally around them in this difficult time.
