The Kansas City Chiefs used to be the Dallas Texans, a charter member of the American Football League. In 1963, the Texans relocated to Kansas City and were renamed the Chiefs, attributed to Mayor Bartle.
The Chiefs have kept their name because it was chosen to honor former Kansas City Mayor Harold Roe Bartle, who was often referred to as “Chief” by the locals and played a key role in getting the team when they were the Dallas Texans. Since the moniker relates to the Mayor instead of Native American culture, it has stayed the same.
