The story of Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi is one of the most bizarre we’ve heard in quite some time. Or should we say former tennis player Camila Giorgi?

Giorgi, who at one time used aggressive play and blistering groundstrokes to ascend as high as number 26 in the world, recently retired from the sport.

And she retired very quietly. Vary abruptly. The reasons for that might be coming to light.

Giorgi is embroiled in a series of controversies. Accusations include tax fraud, unpaid rent, and the theft of valuable antiques chief among them.

The value of the furniture taken is hovering around the $100,000 mark. She is alleged to have skipped out on six months rent all told.

Additionally, the Italian tax authorities are reportedly interested in questioning her regarding an alleged £400,000 unpaid tax bill.

Camila Giorgi On The Run?

The 32-year-old is said to have “fled” Italy to the United States amid these numerous allegations.

The publication La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that tax authorities are “on her trail” due to Camila Giorgi and her family having several “gaps” in their tax returns.

She has not been seen publicly since her retirement was announced.

The outlet reports that: “Investigators think that Giorgi left Europe and moved to the United States.”

The owner of a villa in Italy claims she skipped out on several months of rent and possibly worse, stole antiques from him.

The aggrieved man said he texted Giorgi’s father asking him to return “half of our furniture” which includes “Persian rugs, fine furniture, even an antique half-ton table.”

According to the landlord, her father wrote back dismissing his concerns because the furniture was “of little value.”

She’ll Miss The Beautiful Memories

Camila Giorgi last played in the Miami Open in March, losing to Iga Swiatek in the second round. Less than two months later she was listed on the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) site as ‘retired.’

Little was heard from her at that point until she posted an Instagram message this past weekend asking fans to seek her page out for the truth.

“Please trust this Instagram for truthful information,” the post reads. “To my lovely fans, I am happy to formally announce retirement from my tennis career. I am so grateful for your wonderful love and support for so many years.”

“I cherish all the beautiful memories,” Giorgi continued. “There have been many inaccurate rumours about my future plans, so I look forward to providing more information about exciting opportunities ahead. It is a joy to share my life with you and let’s continue this journey together.”

That journey, according to the Spanish outlet Marca, was to be a focus on modeling.

These reports, however, provide more questions than answers regarding her retirement and her future. We hope she’ll clarify the situation sooner rather than later.
