It was this past spring that Kate Martin attended the WNBA Draft in support of her former Iowa Hawkeyes teammate Caitlin Clark.

Martin did not necessarily expect to get selected. That’s why the guard was so shocked when the two-time defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces drafted her in the second round (18th overall).

Martin might not have been as highly decorated as her former Hawkeyes teammate. But she did put up a stellar college career (13.1 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 51% shooting in 2023-24).

Fast forward several weeks, and all of the talk around the WNBA world has surrounded Clark. To some, she’s being victimized by envy. Fellow rookie Angel Reese has been on the other end of the league-wide drama early in the 2024 season.

That includes Reese’s teammate with the Chicago Sky, fellow rookie Chennedy Carter, putting up a cheap shot on Clark during a game this past weekend.

It has led to widespread debate around the basketball word. Everyone from a tennis legend to other public figures have commented on it.

About the two-time defending WNBA champion Aces? Well, it seems that they are just enjoying life on the back burner despite being the basketball world’s latest iteration of a dynasty.

Martin celebrated her 24th birthday with Aces teammates on Tuesday night with some dinner. What did they do to show their appreciation? Almost leave her behind at the restaurant.

As you will see in the video below, Martin had to wave them down while chasing the bus. Hilarity followed:

The Aces also posted a funny video of Martin’s teammates trolling her with a “birthday song.”

This is the version of the WNBA we don’t get to enjoy when some decide to take the limelight for themselves. It’s not all about unnecessary drama.

As for Martin, she’s been a pretty big surprise since making the Aces’ opening day roster. The guard is averaging 5.2 points and 4.0 rebounds on 35% shooting from three-point range in five games. She’s helped fill the void left by the injured Chelsea Gray.
