Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham passionately defended her teammate Caitlin Clark, asserting that she is undeniably the face of the WNBA.

It seems like common sense, and yet about 90 percent of the league needs to be reminded now and again. Cunningham made the assessment during her new podcast, “Show Me Something.”

She wasn’t kind. And she wasn’t gentle about it.

“It literally p***es me off when people are like, ‘she’s not the face of the league’ … What?” Cunningham said of Clark. “We have a lot of badasses in our league… but when people argue that she’s not the face of our league… You’re literally dumb as (expletive).”

Tell us how you really feel, Sophie!

(WARNING: Language)

Caitlin Clark is the Face of the League

It isn’t so much the fans that aren’t getting the fact that Caitlin Clark is the face of the league. It’s more her colleagues on the court. As well as the past players. Oh, and most of the media.

It is, as Shaquille O’neal once explained, a lot of “professional jealousy.”

The fans, though, surely get it, as evidenced by the recent All-Star voting numbers compared to years past in the WNBA. Clark was named a captain for the 2025 WNBA All-Star Game after receiving a record-breaking 1,293,526 fan votes. (And that was with a sub-par shooting season marred by injuries for much of the first half).

In the year before Clark became a member of the Fever, when she was still playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes at the collegiate level, the All-Star voting numbers for the league were laughable.

The top vote-getter that season? Three-time league MVP and two-time WNBA champion A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces. She earned 95,860 votes.

For the math nerds, that is a 1,249 percent increase in the number of votes for the top earner.

Again, the face of the league. No doubt. Case dismissed.

No Doubt About It

I reiterate – Most people understand what Cunningham is saying, because most people aren’t dumb as … well, what she said.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy recognizes Clark as the “face of the league.” Even WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has acknowledged the ‘Caitlin Clark effect.’

“She’s a generational talent,” Engelbert said during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast. “No league is ever about one player, but in this case, Caitlin brought tens of millions of new viewers into the W.”

“And there’s no denying that impact. Not just in the WNBA, but the world of sports,” Engelbert added. “She’s the most popular athlete in America.”

Which is a nicer way of saying exactly what Sophie said. Got it, haters?
