Former heavyweight champion of the world Deontay Wilder was arrested this week and charged with concealing a handgun while in Hollywood on Tuesday morning.

The boxer was booked in the early hours of Tuesday morning when police officers pulled him over for illegally tinted windows, as well as something obstructing one of his license plates while Wilder was out with his rolls royce. Anonymous police sources said to TMZ Sports that during the stop, they “smelled an odor of burnt marijuana coming from his ride,” justifying cause enough to search the vehicle.

“Our sources say they then found weed and a 9mm in the vehicle, and put Wilder into custody,” the report stated. Luckily, unlike most situations where combat sports fighters are arrested by the police, there was no violence whatsoever. The TMZ sources said that the “6-foot-7 fighter was cooperative and nice throughout the whole ordeal.”

The formal charges against Wilder are possession of a concealed weapon, which is illegal in L.A. county. Records also show that he was released on bond within a few hours for $35,000.

Not hiding from the situation, Wilder posted to his Twitter account “I’d rather be safe than sorry. The end.” Hard to argue with his logic, especially since crime around Hollywood and California, specifically violent crime, has skyrocketed the past two years since the pandemic.

The highly skilled and very theatrical “Bronze Bomber” boasts a record of 43-2-1 with an impressive 42 knockouts to his name. Wilder is expected to face off against potential opponent, heavyweight Anthony Joshua sometime this year, assuming that the gun charges won’t impact those negotiations.
