Owner Robert Kraft tabs Jerod Mayo as the man to replace Bill Belichick – who won six Super Bowls in 24 seasons as the Patriots head coach

The torch has officially been passed in New England, with the team naming former Pats linebacker and assistant coach Jerod Mayo as the new head man under the headset. He replaces the iconic Bill Belichick, who walked away at the end of the season following 24 years and a record six Super Bowl titles.

Mayo, 37, becomes the NFL’s youngest head coach, and it’s been reported that he already had it written into his contract that he would be Belichick’s successor. This makes sense, considering the official announcement came almost immediately upon the latter’s departure.

Jerod Mayo will be officially introduced by the Patriots next week, according to multiple reports.

The new coach spent his entire career with the Patriots, playing linebacker for New England from 2008-2015. He joined Belichick’s coaching staff in 2018.

Belichick’s Bye-Bye

Kraft described coach Bill Belichick’s departure from the team as ‘amicable’, and the man who led Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, and so many other players to success acknowledged them as he walked away.

“Players win games in the NFL,” Belichick said. “I’ve been very, very fortunate to coach some of the greatest players to ever play the game.”
