Oklahoma Ethan Downs was recognized during halftime of the Sugar Bowl to highlight his tireless charitable work, which should have been viewed as a sign of fellowship. Instead? It gave Texas Longhorns fans a chance to embrace their rivalry with OU. And the young man simply embraced it right back.

A Sooner Steals The Show

As far as the actual game itself, #3 Texas was taking on #2 Washington as part of the College Football Playoff semi-final. So needless to say, there were plenty in attendance sporting Burnt Orange. The Longhorns were seeking their first national championship since 2005, so the Lone Star faithful were full of fire.

That passion played out during the game’s halftime festivities. As Ethan Downs – an Oklahoma Sooners senior – was being recognized on the field for his work with local causes, you could hear a smattering of unrest among UT fans.

So, the Sooners D-Lineman decided to take full advantage, flashing the ‘Horns Down’ symbol at Texas fans, which drew an immediate negative reaction.

‘Horns Get Hooked After All

It was yet another unique and somewhat comical chapter in the Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma, which has raged since the two teams first met in 1900.

Over a century later, Ethan Downs may have gotten the best of Texas this weekend. Not only did OU hand the Longhorns their only loss in the regular season – But the Sooner star got to watch in person as his school rivals were eliminated from championship play.

The Washington Huskies advanced to the national championship game by defeating Texas, 37-31.
