Coach Deion Sanders will get some heavyweight help at Colorado from a player who has a championship-caliber pedigree
If you hear the name ‘Gold-berg, Gold-berg, Gold-berg‘ being chanted at Colorado Buffalo games soon – Make no mistake, you aren’t watching WrestleMania. It’s probably just the Boulder fans calling out WWE legend Bill Golderg’s son, Gage, who agreed to come to campus to play for Coach Deion Sanders.
A New Main-Event Star In The Family
Apparently, the apple didn’t fall from the tree for Bill Goldberg, who played defensive line at the University of Georgia – and later for the Falcons, Rams, and Panthers in the NFL. His son Gage will join the Buffs on what is known as a PWO (or Preferred Walk-On).
Deion Sanders had made it a point to bring high-profile names to Colorado since he took over as head coach over a year ago. He went 4-8 in his initial season at CU, but the team showed flashes of brilliance. There are high hopes for the Buffaloes and Coach Prime in year two, and the younger Goldberg says he’s happy to be a part of that growth.
“My Dad’s advice was go to the program that stands out to you the most and the one you know that you will love,” Gage told Jeff Hauser of BuffsBeat. “I already know at this moment that I will love Colorado and it will also be great to be learning from one of my Dad’s best friends ever.”
A Potential Breakthrough Star
A 6-foot, 205-pound middle linebacker from Boerne Champion High School in Texas, Gage Goldberg had a senior season where he logged 154 total tackles (7.5 for loss), eight quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles, a sack, a blocked field goal, and a safety.
Even though he will be playing with one of the most publicized teams in NCAA football at Colorado, Gage is not quite a stranger to the spotlight. He has already been prominently featured on WWE programming with his father when he was a child and as a teenager.
On a side note, Deion Sanders and Bill Goldberg were teammates with the Atlanta Falcons in Prime Time’s early career. So it’s another interesting connection between the two sporting legends over 30 years later.
