Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State and a proud Florida Gator at heart, made a plea to President Trump – take over the College Football Playoffs.

The reason? The Miami Hurricanes might get snubbed despite a 10-2 record and a head-to-head victory over Notre Dame, who sits at 10th in the Playoff rankings. (Miami is 12th and on the cut line, with Texas hot on their heels, and would require an at-large bid).

Should that happen, Rubio will mark it down as a travesty. A travesty, he joked, that would need to be remedied.

“This is the most wonderful and magical time of the year. By that, of course, I’m referring to the College Football Playoff,” Rubio joked with reporters during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

“I’m a Florida Gator, but if the University of Miami gets screwed out of the College Football Playoff after going 10-2 and beating Notre Dame, the whole thing should be scrapped, and you’re going to have to take over,” he added.

Trump to take over the College Football Playoffs?

To be honest – and full disclosure, I am a Hurricanes fan – Miami would have a pretty good gripe if they are left out of the College Football Playoffs.

They have an identical record to Notre Dame, a nearly identical strength of schedule, just trounced 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh 38-7, and, as mentioned, have a 27-24 victory over the Fighting Irish.

Despite Miami’s strong record, its playoff hopes are precarious because it did not win the ACC Championship. As such, they can not improve their position.

That said, it’s not like Notre Dame can boast of a conference championship itself. As an independent football team, they belong to no conference. They have no title to speak of either. All things bein equal, Miami has the better argument.

Trump responded to Rubio’s plea to take over the College Football Playoffs with a simple “Good.”

What would Miami need to sneak in?

As it stands, Miami would be excluded if the College Football Playoffs were today to make room for a conference champion.

For the Hurricanes to sneak in, they need a series of favorable outcomes in conference championship games, such as Texas Tech upsetting BYU and Georgia defeating Alabama, along with other results shaking up the rankings.

Or maybe, as Rubio said, Trump can step in. The President, though, has been busy focused on soccer these days.

Trump has been engaged in a bromance with Cristiano Ronaldo as the United States prepares to host World Cup games in 2026. Aside from his regular attendance at Army-Navy games, Trump has voiced little interest in college football.
