You couldn’t script this any worse if Lin-Manuel Miranda tried.

Tony Award-winning actor Chris Jackson — the guy who originated the role of George Washington in Hamilton, the garbage musical that somehow made viewers dumber when it comes to American history — stepped onto Citi Field for the Mets‘ 2026 Opening Day against the Pirates and completely blanked on the national anthem.

Considering what a disaster the Mets’ season was last year, this is a really, really bad sign for 2026.

Instead of belting out “O’er the ramparts we watched,” Jackson looped back and repeated “What so proudly we hailed” like he was stuck in a loop. The father of our country couldn’t remember the words to the song celebrating the country he supposedly helped create. Oh, man. What a disaster.

Mets fans watching their season opener unfold must have been rolling their eyes at the bad karma.

Trump-Hating Hamilton Star Butchers ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ on Mets Opening Day — Bad Omen?

Look, I can’t sing. I definitely can’t sing the National Anthem. So, on that front, I won’t be too critical. But, dude — you played the nation’s ultimate founding father on stage.

You shouldn’t be dropping the ball here.

Forgetting a line happens to the best of them, but when the man famous for rapping through complex Hamilton verses can’t navigate four straightforward stanzas about the flag, it’s comedy gold. Jackson powered through the rest of the anthem like a pro, but the internet wasn’t about to let the irony slide.

The man does have a super-amazing voice, though. You have to hand him that.

At least the Mets bounced back in the game. The Amazins’ exploded for five runs in the first inning to chase Pirates ace Paul Skenes after just two outs and rolling to a fun, but sloppy 11-7 Opening Day victory over Pittsburgh in front of a packed crowd.

Washington, however, might be turning over in his grave… or demanding a second take.

It’s not the worst screw-up of the “Star-Spangled Banner” we’ve ever seen. Does anybody remember country music singer Ingrid Andress, who shocked the world in 2024 when she gave a horrendous performance of the national anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby?

Afterwards, Andress admitted that she was “drunk” during the performance and entered rehab.

Jackson, meanwhile, has repeatedly attacked President Trump on social media, describing him as a “weak, immature lying toddler throwing temper tantrums and never taking responsibility.” He publicly clashed with him in 2016 after the Hamilton cast lectured then-Vice President Mike Pence at one of their performances.

Remember that next time you think these elitists are even vaguely sane—they once thought a milquetoast guy like Pence was the end of the world.
