Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Nick Castellanos offered a surprisingly sympathetic perspective about the infamous ‘Phillies Karen’ who went viral for taking away a home run ball from a young boy.
The incident, as readers likely recall, took place during a game against the Miami Marlins two weeks ago. Castellanos’ teammate, center fielder Harrison Bader, hit a ball deep into the stands.
The ball was hit in the vicinity of a woman, though it appears to have never touched her hands. The souvenir ultimately bounced into the hands of dad Drew Feltwell, who promptly handed it to his young son for an early birthday present.
The woman, since dubbed ‘Karen,’ stomped over to Feltwell and his son, armed only with her sense of entitlement, and demanded the prize. The father, wanting to diffuse the situation, took the ball from his son and gave it to her.

And a new Halloween costume was born.
The woman has been pilloried from here to high water since the video of her temper tantrum went viral. And rightly so. You don’t make a scene to take a ball from a kid. You don’t.
But Castellanos saw things a little differently.
Sympathy for the Phillies Karen?
In an appearance on Mookie Betts’ podcast “On Base,” Castellanos described the Phillies Karen as perhaps a “very frustrated lady” who may have felt perpetually unlucky and deserved less intense online backlash.
Not many have offered that perspective in defense of the woman.
“When I see that, I don’t just see a ball. I see a very frustrated lady,” the two-time All-Star said. “For years, that felt like she’s been getting the s*** end of the stick, and now this thing happened, and she’s like, ‘I’m not finishing second here. I need this for me.’”
Betts also offered context, suggesting maybe there was a backstory for her, too. Perhaps she really wanted that ball for her own child or grandchild. Hmm … food for thought.
“Maybe she was giving it to her son, or grandson – I don’t know, we don’t know,” Betts added.
Mookie knows what it’s like to get in a tussle with an overzealous fan. Still, his conclusion was this: “The ball should always be given to the kid.”

Praises Bader for taking care of the Kid
Castellanos went on to explain that the team had witnessed what took place in the stands, and Bader was quick to agree to do something to make the kid’s night a little better.
“We saw after the game. Bader’s locker was next to mine in Miami, so I was there when our media relations came up and explained the situation,” Castellanos explained. “And then said, like, ‘hey, do you mind doing this?’ and he was like, ‘of course,’ and went over and took care of the kid and his family and then some.”
Bader gave him an autographed bat and met with the family.

Meanwhile, the Dad involved in the situation has himself begged the public to stop harassing the Phillies Karen, since she’s suffered enough humiliation.
“Please don’t do anything to that lady,’’ he said in an interview with USA Today. “Leave it alone. You know, somebody knows her and can talk to her, that’s different.”
“But God, I don’t want people breaking in their house and stuff like that. The internet already messed her up pretty good.’’
Sound advice.
