Duke combo guard Jared McCain has become the subject of controversy on social media, and the 20-year-old Sacramento, California native reportedly has nothing to do with the matter.

McCain, an expected lottery selection in this month’s 2024 NBA Draft, is far from the biggest name in the draft pool. Maybe that’s why these criminals saw him as the perfect target, knowing that he’s famous but not too famous to make their grift unbelievable.

According to TMZ Sports, a scammer impersonating McCain on Snapchat has been reaching out to people after spending weeks building up their trust, even gifting items from SKIMS and other popular brands at a noticeably discounted price.

Yet, once the criminal has gained the user’s trust, they tell the Snapchatters to send money to a CashApp account that doesn’t even display McCain’s likeness or name. Then, once they receive money, the scammer either ghosts or blocks the user altogether.

McCain has been made aware of the criminal activity involving his persona, and he’s communicated with Snapchat to remove the user from their platform. McCain has made an estimated $1 million in endorsements and will soon make much more once he signs an NBA contract. In other words, the real McCain doesn’t need your money.
