LeBron James announced the “decision of all decisions” on Monday. Leaving many NBA fans speculating if he was finally announcing his retirement from the game.

Instead, he gave us a lame advertisement for a limited edition bottle of the cognac brand Hennessy.

“This fall, I’m going to be taking my talents to Hennessy V.S.O.P.,” he says in the newly released clip.

The Los Angeles Lakers star released a statement regarding the stunt that was incredibly dull and sounded as if it were written by AI.

“It’s an honor to continue this partnership with Hennessy,” James’ statement read. “Our first collection was about a shared pursuit of excellence and boundary pushing, and this new limited edition is another chapter in that story.”

“The design features my crowning gesture, which is special for me and stands for celebration and connection. That’s what this bottle is made for.”

Perhaps Hennessy should have opted for LeBron’s more notable flopping gesture. Since the partnership announcement was a decided flop.

LeBron James ripped over the stunt

It’s impossible in words to express just how lame this is. James’ comments, along with the hashtag “The Second Decision,” were clearly an attempt to bait people into thinking LeBron was making a major announcement.

You know, something along the lines of the first “decision.”

There are very few people on this planet who love attention more than the guy who has been referring to himself as “King James” since he was in high school. He literally had an ESPN special in 2010 about his free agency tour and decision “to take my talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat.”

So you could see why fans might have wondered if he was going to announce his retirement, considering he will be 41 midway through this season. And man, were those fans a little ticked off.

“A grown 40-year-old man baiting for attention just for an ad,” one person wrote on X.

Another added, “Please get this attention whore out of my league. I had enough of him.”

But it wasn’t just fans. It was advertising professionals who called out LeBron James for being LeLame.

“You wouldn’t expect this kind of move from LeBron,” the head of public relations firm Rosica Communications told Business Insider. “For someone who’s demonstrated so much professionalism, it’s not, certainly, a highlight of his professional career — it’s a letdown.”

When will he retire?

Thus far, LeBron has been pretty coy about whether or not this will be his last season in the NBA. The upcoming campaign will be his 23rd in the league.

“I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season,” James said just last week. “However the journey lays out this year, I’m super invested, because I don’t know when the end is. I know it’s a lot sooner than later.”

LeBron has suggested he would not wait around until his other son, Bryce James, is eligible to play in the league with him. Which would seem to be an indication that he won’t be back next year.

Bryce took his talents to Arizona and could easily follow his brother Bronny’s path, declaring for the draft after just one year despite showing no signs of being a capable NBA player.

“I’m not sitting here… no, I’m not waiting on Bryce,” LeBron told reporters. “I don’t know what his timeline is. He’s his own young man now.”

“I got my timeline, and I don’t know if they quite match up.”

For now, he’ll stick to attention-seeking clickbait posts on social media.
