Zohran Mamdani secured a decisive victory over challengers Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa in the 2025 New York City mayoral election.

Mamdani is a bitter, angry socialist who likes to portray himself as a man of the people. It turns out, however, that some of the people in the city that never sleeps didn’t want to cast their vote for him. In fact, they didn’t care for any of the candidates.

Amid the results, sports fans turned the ballot into a veritable tribute to New York sports icons by writing in their names.

Aaron Judge, the Yankees‘ three-time AL MVP, earned himself 11 votes, highlighting his popularity among New York baseball enthusiasts.

More New York sports icons who got votes

Judge wasn’t the only one to get write-in votes for mayor of New York City. All of them would be better than Mamdani. Unfortunately, most of them have prior commitments.

Other New York sports figures like Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart (6 votes), Mets slugger Pete Alonso (3 votes), and Yankees legend Derek Jeter (1 vote) also received scattered support.

One fan apparently wanted to pull off a miracle, voting for Lou Gehrig, who died in 1939.

But it was New York Knicks guard and two-time All-Star Jalen Brunson who garnered the most votes among sports stars at 29. This, despite some of the ballots featuring misspellings of his name.

I think if Brunson really devoted some time and effort to a campaign, he probably could have outpaced Cuomo. Oh, wait, there was a bit of a campaign … sort of.

Mamdani is about to TKO the city

Mamdani’s proposed tax hikes, including raising the corporate rate from 7.25% to 11.5% and a 2% surcharge on individual income exceeding $1 million, will devastate business in New York City. Any sports figure would have been a better selection.

Critics fear these progressive economic policies will drive businesses and wealthy residents to states like Florida and Texas. If athletes were smart, they’d take their lucrative contracts to tax-friendlier states as well.

But I suppose it doesn’t matter much when you’re making $45 million rather than $55 million. The common folk can’t relate.

Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, ripped Mamdani following the election.

“Thirty-something-year-old communist running New York City who’s never had a job in his life — hates America — doesn’t seem like the best,” he said.
