The Seattle Seahawks cruised to a dominant 38-14 victory over the Washington Commanders on Sunday night. As is often the case with blowout games, the broadcasters will sometimes make off-the-cuff comments about topics not necessarily related to the game at hand.

NBC broadcasters Cris Collinsworth and Mike Tirico provided commentary on the game, which was played at Northwest Stadium, just outside the nation’s capital.

With Seattle comfortably ahead at the end of the third quarter, 38-7, the broadcast cut to a serene shot of the U.S. Capitol during the transition.

There’s a calm place,” Collinsworth quipped.

Tirico could do little else than laugh.

Cris Collinsworth with the shutdown joke

The comment could have applied to the Capitol in general, where Congress currently enjoys an approval rating of just 15 percent.

Even Cris Collinsworth’s approval rating isn’t that low. Joe Buck, either. Everyone is universally disappointed in the House and the Senate. The latter of which – Democrats in particular – are responsible for the ongoing government shutdown.

The shutdown has now stretched into its sixth week, with negotiations repeatedly stalled by the Democrats, who are the party preventing the Senate from reaching the 60-vote threshold on a continuing resolution.

Will it ever end?

President Donald Trump predicted in a CBS 60 Minutes interview that Democrats would eventually yield to Republican demands.

“I think they have to,” Trump said. “And if they don’t vote, it’s their problem.”

Anyway, back to the game.

Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold orchestrated the blowout, completing his first 17 passes and tossing four first-half touchdown passes to Tory Horton (two), Cody White, and Elijah Arroyo.

Darnold finished 21-of-24 for 330 yards despite a second-half interception.

Tight end A.J. Barner added a rushing touchdown to put the game out of reach, which led to Cris Collinsworth’s epic comment.

Wide receiver Jaxson Smith-Njiba hauled in eight catches for 129 yards, helping Seattle improve to 5-2 as Washington fell to 3-5.
