The Indianapolis Colts are grappling with a severe quarterback crisis after starter Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending torn Achilles injury during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Jones had been a pleasant surprise this season after being handcuffed by an inept organization in the New York Giants.

But now, with their season hanging in the balance after a three-game losing streak, and backup signal caller Riley Leonard week to week with a strained knee ligament, the Colts are turning to an unlikely person to save the day.

In a stunning development, the Colts plan to work out 44-year-old retired quarterback Philip Rivers, who last played for them in 2021 before retiring.

Fourteen kids and a grandchild

NFL Insider Adam Schefter points out that the retired Philip Rivers, who has ten – ten! – kids, recently became a grandfather. Schefter also added some news that doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.

Rivers is scheduled to fly to Indianapolis for a workout with the team, but, as Schefter reports, he “needs to figure out if he’s willing to play.”

Well, sir, what are you flying out to Indy for if you’re not sure if you even want to play? Simply wild.

The Colts currently have journeyman Brett Rypien on the roster as a temporary option, but they may explore other free agents if Leonard cannot start.

Can you imagine, though, if Rivers came in and led the Colts to the playoffs and even advanced them through the playoffs? Grandpa Rivers? Has a scenario like this ever played out before in the history of the NFL?

Could Philip Rivers be the hero?

The Colts, currently holding an 8-5 record after a pivotal loss to the Jaguars in Week 14, face an uphill battle for the playoffs with only four games remaining in the season.

According to recent projections from ESPN’s Football Power Index and The Athletic, their chances of securing a wild-card spot or the AFC South title now stand at approximately 14-30%, hampered by a grueling remaining schedule against the Seahawks, Jaguars, 49ers, and Texans.

They need something to save their season. Could Rivers really be the answer?

A workhorse on the field, Philip Rivers is also a workhorse off of it. He has 10 children. Unlike many others in the sports world, they are all with one woman – his wife, Tiffany.

Tiffany was his high school sweetheart, and the two married in 2001.

Rivers played 17 NFL seasons (2004–2020), mostly with the Chargers, and his final year with the Indianapolis Colts. He retired with 63,440 passing yards, 421 touchdowns, and eight Pro Bowl selections. He’s one of only six quarterbacks in history to throw for over 400 touchdowns without ever reaching a Super Bowl.

Rivers won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2013. If he leads the Colts to a Super Bowl after becoming a grandfather, they might have to rename it after him.
