Legendary NFL quarterback Tom Brady teased Philip Rivers over his big comeback with the Indianapolis Colts, but said he could “certainly” play in the league at the age of 48 if he had to.

Granted, his role as a part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders means it’ll never happen. But Brady, being Brady, the man likes to remind people now and again of the superhuman things he did in football, well past his prime.

The Colts had been grappling with a severe quarterback crisis after starter Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending torn Achilles injury during a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. In addition to Jones being down, backup signal caller Riley Leonard is week-to-week with a strained knee ligament.

Who did they call? Rivers, who has 10 kids and recently became a grandpa at the age of 44.

Brady, making an appearance on FOX Sports’ The Herd, provided a little self-deprecating humor by jabbing Rivers for retiring, then unretiring.

“Who retires and then unretires and then is ultimately going to retire again? Who does that? That’s ridiculous for Philip to do that,” he joked.

Does Tom Brady still got it?

Tom Brady gave Rivers his props, expressing genuine excitement about watching the 8-time Pro Bowler play again, noting it shows his enduring love for the game and what he’s still capable of.

When asked if he himself could still quarterback at his age, Brady was pretty confident.

“Yes, I certainly could,” he told host Colin Cowherd. “I think the answer for me would be yes. I’m not allowed to anymore because I’m a minority owner of the Raiders, so I can’t unretire.”

“I’m very excited to watch Philip play,” Brady added. “If he’s out there, it’s just very cool. It speaks to how much he loves the game and really what he’s able to do still.”

Loves to remind everyone that he could easily return

Sure, Tom Brady is being a little facetious here. But the man is always talking about how he could return to the NFL if circumstances allowed it. Even at the age of 48.

It wasn’t all that long ago that the all-time great quarterback was hinting at a potential football comeback in his 50s, following a display of his impressive career statistics.

An Instagram post highlighted Brady’s stats across three decades, showcasing 89,214 passing yards and 649 touchdowns over a 23-season career, unmatched by any other quarterback.

It was meant to highlight that Brady was not hindered much, if at all, by age during his lengthy career in which he captured seven Super Bowl titles.

Brady, who turned 48 (or, as some would say, twice as old as Bill Belichick’s girlfriend) in August, captioned the post with an eyebrow-raising comment.

“50’s coming soon?” he wrote.

Rivers played 17 NFL seasons (2004–2020), mostly with the Los Angeles Chargers, and his final year with the Colts. He retired with 63,440 passing yards, 421 touchdowns, and eight Pro Bowl selections. He’s one of only six quarterbacks in history to throw for over 400 touchdowns without ever reaching a Super Bowl.

Rivers won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2013. If he leads the Colts to a Super Bowl after becoming a grandfather, they might have to rename it after him.
