Roger Goodell has heard all your thoughts on the refs and the Kansas City Chiefs, all your conspiracy theories, and declared they are simply “ridiculous.”
Despite an entire season’s worth of evidence, the NFL Commissioner is dispensing with the criticisms. He suggests theories that the refs are manipulating the outcome of games are as absurd as the idea that the league is operating off a script.
“Well, you know this kind of reminds me a little bit of the script, right? That I write a script, and I have the script for the entire season,” said Goodell. “Listen, I think a lot of those theories are things that happen on social media, and they get a new life.”
“As you say, it’s not your theory, but it’s out there. Nobody wants it to be their theory. I understand it, I think it reflects a lot of the fans’ passion,” he added. “And I think it is also a reminder for us about how important the officiating is.”
Goodell Says The Chiefs/Refs Fan Theories Are Crazy
I’ll own that theory, Roger. No problem on this end.
It’s pretty funny listening to Goodell reference how insane the ‘script’ theory is when the Chiefs, thanks in large part to the refs, have had a perfectly scripted season.
Sure-fire Hall of Famer Travis Kelce’s last season, most likely. Gets to take on his brother’s old team in the Super Bowl. The obviously forced Taylor Swift storylines. The potential for the first three-peat since Vince Lombardi’s Packers.
The writers at General Hospital would have scoffed at such a storyline, thinking it was too unbelievable. But Goodell didn’t stop there.
“I think the men and women that officiate in the NFL are outstanding. They have the highest possible standards,” he said without evidence.
“It’s a ridiculous theory for anyone who might take it seriously.”
"That's a ridiculous theory — for anyone who might take it seriously. But at the end of the day, it's something we always have to continue to work on: How do we make our officiating better?"

Making The Officiating Better
Goodell admitted, though, that the fact that it’s even a question of whether the referees might be helping the Chiefs is a problem. And the first step is admitting there’s a problem.
“But at the end of the day, it’s always something that we have to continue to work on. How do we make our officiating better at all times?” he said.
Start by taking up those vision experts on the free LASIK surgery for your refs.
Goodell eventually credited the Chiefs’ talent and ability to win close games with their success.
“If you look at the Chiefs’ record, which I think is an amazing thing. People talk about the competitiveness in our league. The Chiefs with their 15 wins, 15-2 this year. 11 of those 15 games were within one score,” he analyzed. “I think that talks about the competitiveness of our game and the importance of how we officiate it.”
Exactly the point, Roger. As Super Bowl legend Ron Gronkowski said, the refs nudging a call or two in favor of the Chiefs certainly helps when it comes to those one-score games.
Gronk agrees that the Chiefs are the beneficiaries of “lenient” officiating in their games.
“It’s been shown throughout the regular season and extending into the playoffs,” he said. “I just feel like there’s something, like, maybe give them an extra call or two. Don’t make it too obvious, but make it a little obvious.”
