NFL analyst Tony Romo sparked controversy over the weekend by praising the New England Patriots‘ defense as “DTF.” Which, if you’re not well-versed in internet slang, go ahead and mosey on over to the Urban Dictionary to look it up.

Yes, he used that term. No, we’re not kidding. Though, to clarify, Romo had a different meaning for the phrase.

Romo, who started his broadcast career as a breath of fresh air but has slowly morphed into the uber-despised Joe Buck in recent years, blurted it out midway through the second quarter of the Patriots game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“This defense is DTF, Jim,” he said to broadcast partner Jim Nantz, likely causing heads to explode at CBS headquarters.

“Details, toughness. And they finish.”

Tony Romo leaves fans scratching their heads

Wait, I can do this too. DTF = Dumb Tony Facepalm. Or Dopey Tony’s Fail. Tee hee. Get it?

Aside from using an NSFW acronym during an NFL broadcast, Romo’s crack is awfully clumsy. It’s a three-word effort, and he used five words by trying to squeeze in “finish” at the end awkwardly.

Nantz did his best to work through Romo’s absurd analysis.

“That sounds very close to what Mike Vrabel tells them, too. I think the T might be for technique,” he piped up.

Fans, though, were already skewering Tony Romo on social media.

“That’s one way to put it!” Sports Illustrated posted on X.

ESPN personality Mina Kimes wondered, “The Patriots are D T what now?”

“Romo is so awkward,” another fan wrote.

Had fans confused last week, too

Tony Romo keeps making headlines this season for some super-weird reasons. If it’s not an awkward “DTF” joke this week, it’s a wild, random grunting noise a week earlier.

The New York Post reported that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback made an “inexplicable” noise during a broadcast of a game between the Bills and the Chiefs.

Romo “was explaining a defensive holding call on Bills cornerback Cole Bishop” and “pointed out two potential infractions on the replay before letting out a groan-like noise,” the outlet wrote.

What even is this?

Oh, by the way, the Patriots were Digging The Final (score). See what I did there?

They beat the Bucs, 28-23, improving their record to 8-2 on the season.
