WNBA star Angel Reese revealed on her recent podcast “Unapologetically Angel” that she dreads media interactions due to fears that reporters will twist her words.

It’s so bad, from her vantage point, that she’d rather pay fines for skipping interviews than endure the scrutiny.

“Even before the game, I’m terrified of what the media is about to ask. Because it could be the nicest question, but it’s going to get flipped or put into a different light or a different perspective,” she told listeners. “It’s like, ‘Are you here intentionally to start a mess, or are you intentionally here to ask a question?'”

“And it’s really tough for me in the media. Like, I don’t want to do an interview with anybody,” Reese continued. “Seriously, I’d rather take the fine sometimes than talking to the media because it always gets flipped.”

Fines probably aren’t the best option on a WNBA salary.

Angel Reese blames the media for provoking controversy

In the WNBA, players face fines or suspensions for avoiding media duties or making “detrimental” statements. Angel’s comments are a clear reflection of one such very recent incident.

An incident in which she only has herself to blame.

Reese was suspended by the Chicago Sky for the first half of a game against the Las Vegas Aces due to comments she made to the Chicago Tribune.

The comments, in which she viciously criticized the team’s roster and direction, were deemed “detrimental to the team.”

“I’m not settling for the same (expletive) we did this year,” Reese told the outlet. “We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That’s a nonnegotiable for me.”

“I am very vocal about what we need and what I want,” she threatened. “I’d like to be here for my career, but if things don’t pan out, obviously, I might have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me.”

Reese went on to suggest that one of her teammates was too old to recover from injury.

Plays the victim

After making the controversial statements, throwing her own team under the bus – even before the season had ended – Angel Reese suggested it was the media’s fault.

The two-time WNBA All-Star semi-apologized to her teammates but still blamed the newspaper for allegedly taking her direct quotes out of context.

“I probably am frustrated [with] myself right now,” Reese later said. “I think the language is taken out of context. I really didn’t intentionally mean to put down my teammates, because they’ve been through this with me throughout the whole year.”

“So, I want to apologize to my teammates, which I already have about the article and how it was misconstrued about what was said. And I just have to be better with my language,” she added. “Because I know it’s not the message, it’s the messenger.”

It’s you, Angel. You’re the messenger. That’s not to say she’s 100% wrong on the media being a constant agitator, especially when it comes to Reese and her rival, Caitlin Clark. But these were direct quotes that came out of her mouth.
