A man died from wounds he sustained after being gored by a bull at a festival in Spain on Saturday, authorities said. The incident occurred in Pobla de Farnals in the Valencia region, where events like this are not only a tradition, but commonplace.

“Bulls are released into the streets, and runners dash ahead of them in a tradition played out in more than 1,820 Spanish municipalities every year, according to a recent survey by animal rights groups AnimaNaturalis and CAS International,” a Reuters report stated, in regards to the bovine attack.
The 61-year-old father of two, who was identified as Jose Antonio Subies, was gored in his side during the event by a bull named ‘Cochino’. He underwent emergency surgery but died on Sunday.
His friend, 63, was attacked in both legs by the same bull and is in a stable condition in hospital.
Footage showed the two men being lifted up in the air by the bull after it was set loose on the streets in La Pobla de Fornals near Valencia.
The chance to outrun a bull is not only part of the national culture and history of Spain, it also draws several tourists every year who are brave (or foolish) enough to take the challenge. And while considered by some to be the ultimate thrill rush of a lifetime, it comes with consequences.
