Despite his recent loss to Gervonta Davis, Ryan Davis still has a vocal supporter in his promoter, boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya

After much hype, Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis finally squared off in a battle of unbeaten fighters earlier this year. But despite the fact that Garcia may have come up short in their April encounter, his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, still sees a bright future ahead for the 25-year-old fighter.

The bout, a catchweight fight between ‘King Ry’ and ‘Tank’, occurred in Las Vegas on a card co-promoted by DAZN and Showtime. Davis landed a body blow to Ryan Garcia in the seventh round that dropped him.

He didn’t get up for the ten-count, despite not looking injured enough for the fight to be over. This drew criticism from fans and critics, who said the fighter simply “up”. However, De La Hoya insists this isn’t the case.

In fact? Oscar De La Hoya envisions a potentially huge fight soon for Garcia (now 19-1). That is… if his man can get past Oscar Duarte (26-1, 20 KOs). The two face off on December 2nd at the Toyota Center in Houston.

“I have to commend Ryan for taking this tough challenge after his defeat,” Oscar De La Hoya said after his protege’s loss. “[Duarte] is coming off 11-straight knockout wins. I mean, that tells you a lot about him, but it also tells you a lot about Ryan’s character.”

The Golden Boy Entertainment promoter says that world title opportunity – among many other huge professional achievements – are within his fighter’s grasp. He says that he sees his fighter as a potential box office draw.

“I can see Ryan Garcia opening up the Sphere in Las Vegas,” De La Hoya asserted. “I can see Ryan Garcia being a superstar.”
