Jake Paul has battled everyone from social media stars to retired boxers to mixed martial artists since he transitioned from a YouTube celebrity and influencer to a full-fledged fighter. He has lost to Tommy Fury, but defeated Nate Diaz, in his last two bouts.

As he heads into a fight with the little-known Houston native August (10-1-1), Paul discusses why he’ll be facing this particular opponent now and what his overall goals in boxing are.

“There’s a lot of reasons,” Jake Paul said during an exclusive interview with The MMA Hour. “It’s mostly for me, for my experience, my road to world championship, and to grow inside the squared circle, those four corners. And to get the time under my belt.”

“I think people, when I said I wanted to become world champion, thought it was just some gimmick or I was saying it just to sell more fights or to gain people’s attention,” he continued. “When I said it, I actually meant it.”

“This is me acting like a boxing prospect,” Jake Paul continued. “It’s me building my experience in the ring, taking challenges, and staying sharp in camp. Working, working, working.”

“This is the time I need to be able to get to that level of being the best in the world,” Paul continued. “That’s where I’m going to be and that’s where I have my mind set on. It’s my biggest goal and this is the path to get there.”

That path could include a highly anticipated fight with Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world.

“I think the path that I’m on now tees me up in the future to fight Canelo,” Paul said adding that he considers a matchup between him and Alvarez to be “closer than we think.”

The path involves matches over a year or two that would show Alvarez that Paul is serious about boxing. Bleacher report however, warns that he might want to consider shortening up the timeline.

“There’s no guarantee that money is sitting there in another year or two,” the outlet writes.

Paul, 26, has competed in both mixed martial arts and boxing. So has his brother Logan, who took on boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in an exhibition bout and is currently a performer in WWE. Both Paul brothers have made millions in endorsements based on their social media presence and athletic endeavors.
