Chael Sonnen recently called a potential Masvidal vs. Diaz showdown, one of the worst ideas “I’ve heard in a meaningful amount of time”

It’s sounding more and more like Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz are circling back around for a rematch in the squared circle. And while that may sound like sweet music to some fight fans’ ears, it has certainly hit a sour note with former UFC star and combat sports pundit Chael Sonnen.

A Re-Match In The Ring?

Jorge Masvidal and Diaz met before but it was in The Octagon. They main-evented UFC 244 in 2019 at Madison Square Garden for the inaugural ‘BMF’ title. Masvidal picked up a win due to a stoppage in that contest.

Now, however, a proposed boxing match between the two could take place, and it’s even been given the blessing of Dana White and the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Jorge Masvidal walked away from MMA competition after losing to Gilbert Burns at UFC 287.

It sounds like the fight could take place in the first half of 2024, but Chael Sonnen says it’s not a matter of timing. The whole concept is a bad idea, in his opinion.

Sonnen Sounds Off

“This is amongst — if not the worst — idea I have heard in a meaningful period of time, unless your goal is like Brewster’s Millions to see how fast you can [run] out of money,” Chael Sonnen stated on his YouTube channel. “The only thing that has kept [boxing] alive is that you keep finding a bigger fool who is willing to lose money.”

“[I’ve been around the game,] so I have the right to assess it. I’m not insulting it.”

Despite Sonnen’s negative outlook on the encounter, it seems likely to take place. Upon his ‘retirement’, Jorge Masvidal left the door open to other types of fighting outside of UFC.
