Tom Brady recently revealed that he almost returned to the NFL in early 2023, but decided not to for a very funny reason

For a while, it seemed like NFL fans were never sure when Tom Brady would retire and actually stay retired. Neither was he – apparently – as he revealed in a recent social media post that he almost came back out of retirement in May, but decided not to. The reason he gave for not pulling the trigger is unique and amusing.

Another Comeback For Tom Brady?

Brady, 46, capped off perhaps the greatest career in the history of the NFL, winning seven Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers and re-writing the league’s passing records. So, his final farewell to football was certainly historic.

However, Tom Brady almost decided to make a return to the field as he nears his fifties. Eventually, he backed off the idea when he found out that several of his friends had already planned a retirement party for him.

“Looking back on 2023 grateful for every moment,” he wrote. “Cherishing the highs, learning from the lows, and looking forward to what’s coming next. I’m blessed to have family and friends filled with so much love, joy, and compassion surrounding me.

Primed To Party

Then, Tom Brady dropped a bit of a punchline in parenthesis.

“The only downside to 2023 was when I was about to unretire in May and my friends threw a surprise retirement party. Kind of forced my hand.”

It was widely speculated that Tom Brady’s retirement wouldn’t last and that he would come back to the NFL in 2023 – just as he did after saying he was retiring back in 2021, only to return for the season.

Even today, a quarterback injury or opening still has fans throwing out the G.O.A.T.’s name, perhaps only as a wish. For now, it looks like Tom Brady is content in his multiple endorsement roles, and with his business ventures – which includes being a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders.
