TOMMY FURY AND KSI POST FIGHT INTERVIEW | THE PRIME CARD via DAZN Boxing, YouTube screenshot

In case you didn’t know because you didn’t care to watch one of the most boring boxing matches of 2023, social media influencer turned boxer KSI lost his heavily drummed up fight against professional cruiserweight Tommy Fury. If you’re a boxing fan, you probably knew this because he’s been complaining about the results for months. Well, in case you thought he’d let the drama go, he hasn’t. Instead, KSI has decided to vacate the Misfits Boxing cruiserweight title belt.

Launching the small yet mighty boxing promotion Misfits Boxing in 2022, love it or hate it, no one can deny that shoving internet celebrities and niche influencers into a boxing ring has been one of the best things to happen in the sport in perhaps decades. The rebound careers and reputation (re)builders of the Paul brothers, Logan and Jake, is a testament to the fact that combining high flying entertainment and legitimate athletic skill has brought attention to the fading fight game as MMA has continued to dominate the fight scene.

While Jake Paul has managed to be the de-facto face of the sport amongst younger fans besides the likes of boxing champion Canelo Álvarez, KSI deserves credit for putting eyes on the influencer boxer scene from the beginning.

Now, it doesn’t seem like the Englishman has his heart in this game anymore, and has announced in a cryptic message that he will be leaving the title belt open as he has “other plans in the pipeline”.

“I have enjoyed the honour of being The Misfits Cruiserweight Champion immensely,” KSI posted to X this week. “I have other plans in the pipeline and it wouldn’t be fair for me to hold that title any longer so… I am relinquishing the belt and a new champion will be crowned on the next Survivor Tag!”

In his return to the ring after a three-year hiatus, KSI achieved notable victories in the cruiserweight division, defeating rapper Swarmz, Mexican boxer Luis Pineda, gamer Faze Temper, and nightclub tycoon and professional boxer Joe Fournier.

However, despite facing a loss against Tommy Fury, KSI never officially relinquished the cruiserweight title until now.
