Before Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes found himself as a three-time Super Bowl champion and two-time NFL MVP, he starred playing high school and college baseball.

In fact, the NFL’s best quarterback once threw a 16-strikeout no-hitter while playing in high school in Texas. Even after committing to Texas Tech, Mahomes was selected in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

It shouldn’t be considered too much of a surprise that Kansas City’s star quarterback can do his thing on the baseball diamond. His father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., starred at the Major League Baseball level for 11 seasons.

No, Mahomes is not going to pull the football equivalent of Michael Jordan. But the two-time reigning Super Bowl champion just recently indicated that he’d love to take part in spring training with the Kansas City Royals at some point.

“I’ve talked to the Royals. And if I can maybe go out to a spring training, I’m not opposed to that. I’ll get it approved by the Chiefs and everything like that. But maybe one of these years I go out there and see what I got.”

Patrick Mahomes told Time Mazagine earlier in April (h/t the Kansas City Star)

About that? There is a real possibility that we’ll be seeing Mahomes do his thing during spring training at some point soon.

“We’d love to have him come. He’s welcome anytime. He’s part owner of the team, he can do whatever he wants,” Royals manager J.J. Picollo said recently, via Fox News.

“It would be great. It’d be fun to have him around. I know that a couple of our guys have relationships with him. But if you wanted to come down, we’d love to have him come down. Problem is, when we’re in spring training, he’s out celebrating Super Bowls.”

This is true. Mahomes has won three of the past four Super Bowls. He’s typically spending a nice amount of spring training celebrating the hardware with his teammates and better half Brittany Mahomes. It’s also true that the star quarterback owns 1% of the Royals.

With all of that said, don’t expect a full-time transition to Major League Baseball. Over the course of his first six seasons as the Chiefs’ starter, the 28-year-old Mahomes has thrown for 28,424 yards with 219 touchdowns and 63 interceptions. At this rate, he’s on pace to surpass Tom Brady as GOAT. You’re not giving that up to play for the Kansas City freaking Royals.
