Former two-time Major winner Angel Cabrera is reinstated by the PGA after serving time for threatening and harassing his former girlfriend

Angel Cabrera, who won the 2007 US Open and 2009 Master’s Tournament, was reinstated by the PGA Tour this week after serving 30 months in a South American prison camp. The 54-year-old was convicted in July 2021 of making threats and harassing his former partner, Cecelia Torres Mana.

Cabrera was originally arrested in January 2021 by Interpol on a warrant for the charges. Mana’s claims were also substantiated by another female associate of Cabrera’s – Micaela Escudero.

Miguel received a three-year, 10-month sentence for gender violence and was released on parole in August after spending 30 months in custody between Brazil and Argentina. And recently, a PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed to various news outlets that Cabrera is eligible to play.

“I made serious mistakes,” Cabrera told Golf Digest in a recent interview. “I refused to listen to anyone and did what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted.”

“That was wrong. I ask Micaela for forgiveness. I ask Celia for forgiveness. They had the bad luck of being with me when I was at my worst. I wasn’t the devil, but I did bad things.”

“I am deeply embarrassed because I disappointed the people closest to me – and everyone who loves me through golf. Golf gave me everything, and I know I will never be able to repay the debt I owe this sport.”

Last week, Angel Cabrera played in his first competitive golf event since his release. He made three birdies and three bogeys in the first round of the 72-hole, PGA Tour Latinoamerica event.
