Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid‘s comments during a post-game press conference after a 20-17 Thanksgiving Day loss to the Dallas Cowboys have gone viral. For all the right reasons.
Reid praised fans as a model of unity across religions and races amid a recent tragedy that struck this country.
The three-time Super Bowl-winning coach emphasized sports as a positive alternative to violence. Clips of his comments were shared widely, with many fans voicing support.
“So, Thanksgiving – it is Thanksgiving, so that’s bigger than probably any of this,” Reid opened the press conference. “This was a nice microcosm of how the world should be, where it’s competition. It’s not people killing each other and doing all those crazy things that go on. All religions, all races out here, enjoying an event.”
“And if we can learn one thing from it, you know, as we go through it as a country here, man, that’s it right there. Great competition. And then everybody gets along, and then shakes hands afterward, and go about your way there.”
Reid, taking the world-view angle and urging unity after a heartbreaking, potential playoff-killing loss, shows some solid character.

Andy Reid’s comments especially hard-hitting considering recent days
Coach Andy Reid’s comments, though he makes no indication that this is what he is referring to, come in the wake of an ambush attack on two members of the Guard in Washington, D.C.
President Trump on Thursday was forced to make the heartbreaking announcement to the nation that one of the victims, 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, had succumbed to her injuries.
The individual behind the heinous attack was 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who initially entered the United States on a temporary visa issued to him in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome.
There is further strife across the country that he could be referring to. There is the Ukraine War. Christians are being slaughtered in Nigeria. Or maybe nothing particular at all. Perhaps he’s talking about all of it.
Either way, wouldn’t it be nice to get back to a place where the most significant concern in life is whether or not your team won on Sunday?

Strikes the right tone here
It’s not often that Andy Reid weighs in on societal issues, but when he does, it has a significant impact. He received high praise for responding to the Kansas City Super Bowl parade shooting in 2024.
Reid paid tribute to Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a beloved local radio disc jockey and avid fan of the team who was tragically killed in the incident. He also complimented law enforcement on its handling of the incident.
The shooting was the result of an ignorant group of young thugs caught up in looking at each other disrespectfully.
“That’s not what Kansas City is all about,” Reid continued. “For our youth of America that we gather together, you’re our future and as great as we can make this place we want to do that.”
Reid also praised first responders for their heroism. Now, he’s trying to bring some sanity to an insane world.
