The union of NFL referees has finally weighed in on the controversy over whether or not officials are making calls in favor of the Kansas City Chiefs. You’ll be surprised to learn they disagree with the assertion.

The group issued a statement agreeing with Commissioner Roger Goodell that fan theories that the Chiefs are the recipient of a more significant share of favorable calls are “preposterous.”

Hogwash, even. Bordering on balderdash.

“Commissioner Goodell’s comments that it is ‘ridiculous’ to presume that NFL officials are not doing everything possible to make the right calls on every play is spot on,” union executive director Scott Green said.

Which do you prefer, dear reader? A conspiracy, or just plain incompetence?

“Officiating crews do not work the same team more than twice each regular season. It is insulting and preposterous to hear conspiracy theories that somehow 17 officiating crews consisting of 138 officials are colluding to assist one team.”

Refs Are Totally Not Helping The Chiefs, Rubes

Why yes? Yes, it is conceivable that referees who happen to be working the Chiefs games are given a little wink and a nod by the people who sign their checks.

As we’ve stated before, the NFL benefits greatly from having the Chiefs march on in the playoffs. The three-peat storyline, the overexposed Kelce brothers, and the Taylor Swift storyline drawing in viewers who don’t normally watch football, for example.

The fact that the union for the refs has to come out and issue a statement on the matter proves how bad things have gotten. If it’s not simply flat-out obvious, then it’s at least on the minds of fans enough that they’re getting into the league’s ear.

Goodell also vehemently denied allegations that the refs are helping the Chiefs.

“I think the men and women that officiate in the NFL are outstanding. They have the highest possible standards,” he said. “It’s a ridiculous theory for anyone who might take it seriously.”

Rest Assured Football Fans, The Referees Are On It

Listen, the Kansas City Chiefs getting the kid-glove treatment from the refs has been a relentless storyline throughout the 2024 season, and it’s only been amplified during the playoffs.

The Houston Texans were the victims of a pair of phantom roughing-the-passer calls in their 23-14 loss to the Chiefs in their AFC Divisional round matchup.

The Buffalo Bills? Well, there’s an entire 5-minute video breakdown of the staggeringly one-sided calls.

Honestly, when the people involved push back by saying you’re essentially stupid for believing such conspiracy theories, it only raises more questions. Remember when experts had us all walk one-way on painted lines down grocery store aisles during COVID, and anybody who objected was a rube? Same vibes here.

Green insisted that the last thing fans need to worry about is the referees.

“There are many things that fans can worry about over a 17-game season, such as coaching decisions, player injuries, the weather and, yes, even close calls on incredible plays made by incredible athletes,” he said.

“But you can rest assured that on every single down, NFL Officials, both on the field and in the replay booth, are doing everything humanly possible to officiate every play correctly.”

And yet, somehow, I’m not resting assured.
