Peacock is entering new territory with the announcement of a half-hour scripted comedy series spotlighting the WNBA in its first-ever TV venture.
The show, The W, is helmed by Chiney Ogwumike, a two-time league All-Star, and GLOW creators Carly Mensch and Liz Flahive. That latter is a show about women’s wrestling, if you weren’t aware.
The series promises to explore the “glamour and grind” of women’s professional basketball through the chaotic time a rookie spends in the league alongside their young agent.
“The half-hour project follows a hot-shot rookie WNBA player and her inexperienced agent navigating the wild ups and downs of the world of women’s professional basketball,” Deadline writes.
“It is loosely inspired by Ogwumike and her longtime business partner and agent, Allison Galer, who chose an unconventional path after Ogwumike, who was the first pick in the 2014, chose the 24-year-old as her rep.”
They added that the show “will look at the ‘glamour and grind’ of women’s sports.”
A Comedy About The WNBA…
Some would say if you wanted to watch a comedy about the WNBA, just go ahead and follow the regular season. The hijinks are practically endless.
You could have an episode where the players go on strike even after the league lost about $50 million last season while the befuddled ladies accidentally shut down The W and sink their careers.
Or maybe an episode that follows Angel Reese teaming up with Bronny James as they attend a secret layup and shooting skills camp.
Perhaps one where jealous rivals bully an Iowa girl, who then works out in the off-season, gets mad jacked, and suddenly becomes the tormentor.
Maybe that last one is more of an after-school special. Still, the possibilities are endless, you see. The laughs, plentiful.
Here’s some comedy in the meantime …

So Crazy, It Just Might Work
Seriously, what better plot could you possibly have than one of your top stars complaining about not making enough money to cover their $8,000/month rent while simultaneously being unable to shoot a basketball from within two feet of the rim?
This whole The W thing might work out after all. Comedy gold, Jerry.
If the WNBA funds the project, they may finally get back in the black financially.
The new season of basketball starts in May. The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) opted out of the league’s current collective bargaining agreement. It will become effective in October of 2025 after the playoffs conclude.
After that, The W will probably have to rebrand as The U, as Unrivaled will be the only women’s basketball league left.
