The Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid blamed the Arizona Cardinals’ turf for the injuries suffered by the teams’ kicker Harrison Butker and cornerback Trent McDuffie.

The Chiefs defeated the Cardinals 44 to 21 on Sunday, but both Butker and McDuffie suffered injuries during the game.

During a press conference, Reid updated the media on the injuries to both Butker and McDuffie explaining, “Injury wise, Harrison Butker has an ankle sprain and we’re just going to see. He’s got a little swelling in there. So we’ll just see how that goes. Day-to-day.”

“McDuffie, Trent has a hamstring and you know we’re treating it, we’re gonna see where that goes, but he’s gonna struggle to make it. He’ll struggle to make it to the game. Other than that everybody is up and rolling. We look forward to the challenge of playing the Chargers,” he added.

During the Q&A portion of the press conference, he was asked about the field to which he promptly blamed Cardinals’ turf.

He explained, “Well, they re-sodded it, which is a good thing because they practice in there. But it was a little bit loose. That’s what happens sometimes when you re-sod, it’s loose.”

“Listen, it was part of the Butker injury and McDuffie injury,” he asserted. “Unfortunately, that was part of it. Just the turf picked up and — so I would tell you that that did have something to do with it. If it didn’t I’d tell you that too. It’s not an excuse by any means.”

“But you call can see it when you watch the tape,” he concluded.

Butker was injured on the opening kickoff of the game where he appeared to roll his ankle right at the moment of kicking the ball. While he left the game, he would eventually return and kick a 54-yard field goal.

As for McDuffie he was injured while attempting to cover Cardinals wide receiver A.J. Green.

Arizona Cardinals spokesman Mark Dalton rebuked Reid’s comments telling Pro Football Talk, “The entire field was replaced on Monday, August 22nd — the day after the last home preseason game vs. Baltimore — so it had it almost three full weeks before the Week One game vs. Kansas City.”

He added, “That’s more than enough time for the Tifway Bermuda 419 hybrid sod to take root, especially in 109 degrees and abundant sunshine.”

As Reid noted at the beginning of his press conference, the Chiefs face the Chargers on Thursday night. The Chargers defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 24-19 on Sunday.
