Floyd Mayweather and The Money Team have always made it clear they’re stacking checks and moving in style wherever they are. However, Mayweather is definitely traveling with a pretty heavy show of force as seen in a recent trip to South Africa that has since gone viral.

The boxing legend during his stay in South Africa, in typical Floyd fashion, decided to visit a local Gucci location, but not without his entourage of heavily armed security guards to ensure he was traveling to and from safely.

As seen in the footage, he’s surrounded by several armed men, with one of them even carrying a rifle and multiple magazines. Now, while celebrities definitely have to be concerned with their safety when out and about, this begs the question of what is Mayweather so worried about that he’d have guards ready to take on the whole neighborhood just so he could buy more Gucci products? That’s a fair question, right?

There are three possible reasons that come to mind; one that is most likely, one that is more of a hunch, and the last one being kind of ridiculous but not outside the realm of possibility.

My first guess is that Mayweather was advised to travel with heavily armed guards due to the increasingly dangerous levels of violent street crime in major cities throughout South Africa. The current state of crime in South Africa is concerning, with a troubling trend of rising violence. Between January and March 2023, there were numerous cases of murder and rape, often with drugs or alcohol as a motivator. In the first quarter of the 2022/2023 financial year, there were over 6,289 lives lost due to violent acts involving firearms, knives, sharp and blunt instruments, stones, and even bare hands.

My second guess is a little more personal to Floyd. Boxing fans haven’t forgotten his fight with John Gotti III which ended up with a wild post-fight brawl. Referee Kenny Bayless had more on his plate than expected, especially after he called a finish to the fight. The situation escalated dramatically, and Gotti, visibly upset, maneuvered around the ref to confront Mayweather, leading to a brawl until their teams intervened. This incident turned the event into chaos, with both fighters persistently trying to resume the fight. Gotti has since gone on to say that Mayweather made an enemy for life. If that isn’t a threat, I don’t know what is.

The third possibility is probably more of a reach, but like I said, not outside the realm of possibility. Floyd has for several years been feuding back and forth with celebrity YouTubers Jake and Logan Paul, especially after his exhibition fight with Logan in 2021 where Jake managed to also annoy Floyd publicly by grabbing his hat off his head after a press conference.

Recently, the two had a run in after a Miami Heat game this summer, and with a group of his entourage, began to approach Jake who immediately started running away. The exact reason for fleeing the scene is still not really known since Floyd barely talked about it and Jake hasn’t said much either. Is Floyd worried about some Paul brother retribution? Maybe, but it’s hard to think the Paul brothers would be so villainous as to make Floyd think he needs all those guns.
