Munich Air Disaster (1958)

One of the darkest days in football history, the Munich air disaster claimed the lives of 23 individuals, including eight Manchester United players. The plane, carrying the team back from a European Cup match, crashed while attempting to take off from a slush-covered runway. This tragic incident tore apart a team famously known as the “Busby Babes”.

Heysel Stadium Disaster (1985)

This tragedy struck before the European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus. Fights broke out between rival fans, leading to a collapsing wall which killed 39 people and injured hundreds. The aftermath of the Heysel disaster led to all English football clubs being banned from European competitions for five years.

Hillsborough Disaster (1989)

Another dark chapter in football’s history, the Hillsborough tragedy claimed 96 lives. Due to a series of mismanagements, Liverpool supporters were crushed against perimeter fencing. The tragedy led to a deep examination of stadium safety, and eventually to the widespread introduction of all-seater stadiums in the UK.

Marshall University Plane Crash (1970)

In one of the deadliest sports-related tragedies in U.S. history, 75 individuals, including 37 members of the Marshall University football team, lost their lives when their plane crashed. The accident is memorialized in the film “We Are Marshall”.

Lokomotiv Yaroslavl Plane Crash (2011)

Russian ice hockey was shaken when a plane carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team crashed shortly after takeoff. The tragedy claimed the lives of 44 individuals, including numerous players and coaching staff. It was a tremendous blow to the world of hockey.

Philip Hughes Incident (2014)

The cricketing world was left in shock when Australian cricketer Philip Hughes was fatally struck by a bouncer during a domestic match. Hughes, a young talent, passed away two days later. His death initiated a conversation about the safety of helmets and protective equipment in the sport.

Oklahoma State University Crashes (2001 & 2011)

OSU faced two separate plane crashes involving its sports teams. In 2001, a plane carrying members of the men’s basketball team crashed, killing ten.

Ten years later, a plane carrying the women’s basketball head coach and assistant coach also crashed.
