The XFL and the USFL have announced will merge operations, according to multiple reports. Few details have been made available, but it appears the two competing leagues have decided that it’s better to work with one another, rather than against each other.

“Today, the United States Football League (‘USFL’) and the XFL announced their intention to merge,” the leagues said in a joint release. “Subject to customary regulatory approvals and if the transaction is consummated, the new league will establish best-in-class operations based on the most recent seasons of both leagues.
“This historic combination will anchor professional spring football with substantial capabilities and resources to ensure future growth and continue to enhance the development of the collective players, coaches, and staff that are coming together,” the statement continued. “More details regarding the new league will be announced at a later date.”
As stated previously, not many details are initially available, except that the unification will begin with the 2024 season. That includes cities and ownership. It also doesn’t mention where the group headed by The Rock (owners of the XFL) will stand when the smack is finally laid down.

The new USFL has been playing for two seasons, the first with all the teams playing in Birmingham, Alabama. The XFL came back for its third incarnation in 2023 with teams playing in eight different cities. The XFL is owned by movie star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, and his former wife Dany Garcia, while the USFL is under the ownership of Fox Corp.
No further information has been provided on whether or not all 16 teams will play in their home cities in 2024.
