New Orleans forward Zion Williamson has shrugged off critics who say he isn’t dedicated enough to his physical fitness

Despite being one of the best players in the NBA during his career, Pelicans forward Zion Williamson has been chided by both fans and media for a failure to maintain his weight. Already a big man at 6’6″ and (listed at) 284 pounds, he has been known to have a fondness for the fork. But in recent comments, he says he isn’t feeling guilty about his girth.

Williamson, 23, was the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft but has struggled with both injuries and weight issues. Ever since he entered the league, there have been multiple questions regarding his work ethic, despite his immense talent.

He has been particularly criticized by two Hall of Famers who had to fight weight issues themselves – Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal. The NBA legends have pushed for the young star to get more serious about his fitness. When asked about what the two players-turned-analysts had to say, Zion Williamson didn’t have much of a reaction. Instead, he remained reticent and respectful – but without making any commitment to changing his routine.

“If it comes from a great place and a place where they just wanna see me do better, thank you,” Zion said about the criticism. “But if it comes from anywhere else, everyone [is] entitled to their own opinion. Can’t control that.”

Still, Zion Williamson says he respects the opinion of the fans who just want to see the team win. He assured the Pelicans faithful that their best interests – and those of the franchise – are the main things on his plate right now.

“If you love the city, which I very much do, it will love you back,” Zion said. “So, to the city, to the fans, thank you. I’m gonna do my best not to let y’all down.”

Zion’s appetite doesn’t seem to be getting in the way of his achievements. While he might not have the most robust figures early in the 2023-24 season, he has cooked up 22.9 points per game. He’s also gobbling up 5.6 rebounds and dishing out 4.7 assists per night for the Pelicans, who currently sit at 13-11.
