UFC legend Conor McGregor has recently gone on social media and floated the idea of running for President of Ireland

Conor McGregor has become one of the highest-paid and highest-profile athletes in the entire world throughout his career. The former two-division UFC World Champion became the promotion’s biggest draw, even fighting boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather in a 2017 exhibition bout that blew up at the box office. Along the way, ‘The Notorious One’ has always spoken his mind and seemingly done everything in life that you could imagine.

Well, maybe he hasn’t quite done everything. At least, not until now. Based on a recent social media post, is it possible we could see President McGregor sometime shortly?

That seemed to be what Conor McGregor was suggesting when he went on X social media earlier this month to float the idea of running for president of Ireland. He even sized up some of his potential opponents in the field. (The current President is Michael Higgins of the Labour Party, who has been in office since 2011).

While some people may think it’s all a bit of a joke, don’t be so sure. Conor McGregor, 35, is nearing the end of his competitive career and will be looking forward to the next phase of his life. He’s already made a fortune and he’s beloved in his home country.

In reality, he’s exactly the type of ‘celebrity candidate’ that could win a national election. Particularly in Ireland, a country that has suffered through decades of political unrest and violence. A candidate who exudes the strength of a fighter could strike a chord with the people.

Besides, McGregor is constantly talking politics anyway, so why not get involved directly?

“Don’t ever forget this while our government sits in the daily chamber doing nothing but pointing their fingers across at one another,” McGregor recently posted. “Do something! Multiple solid suggestions have been put forward, where is our move of action? What are we doing? We are not forgetting. We need to see action.”

Perhaps Conor McGregor is preparing to take his own advice and planning on “doing something”. We shall see if that something involves running for President of Ireland.
