Cam Newton, a former NFL MVP and quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, was recently involved in a physical altercation at a 7-on-7 youth football tournament in Atlanta.

Media reports suggest Newton was defending himself from an ambush after video of the fight was posted to social media.

Members of TopShelf Performance, according to The Athletic, confronted Newton at a tent sponsored by We Ball Sports, an apparel and sports media company that he works with.

The New York Post indicates it was a fight borne from trash-talking that got a little too personal. TopShelf Performance defeated Newton’s C1N in a heated contest the day before.

Cam Newton Taunting Led To Fight?

Newton, the Post writes, was heavily taunting coaches from the other team about betting and having lots of money.

“This is typical Cam Newton behavior on the 7-on-7 scene,” one of the coaches involved in the fight said. “But yesterday was a little worse, and you can even ask people in his organization. Cam ain’t never act like that.”

“I’ve seen him talk crazy to parents, talk crazy to some of the kids because everybody tries to make it seem like, ‘Oh, the kids just be disrespecting Cam.’ No, Cam be disrespecting people, too.”

Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe insisted, however, that Cam Newton had been “disrespected” and provided a racial element to the brawl.

Namely, that two prominent white quarterbacks with the last name ‘Manning’ would never find themselves in the situation Newton found himself in.

“Peyton and Eli have been having a camp for 20-something years,” Sharpe said during his Nightcap podcast. “You ain’t never seen no kids being disrespectful to Peyton and Eli.”

“Y’all think that’s cute [telling Cam Newton he’s trash]. It’s not,” Sharpe added. “It’s really embarrassing that somebody takes time out of their day… and try to give back and you’re disrespectful, ungrateful.”

Further video posted to social media shows individuals involved in the fight doing their own trash-talking.

All those involved in the brawl – including Cam Newton – were reportedly removed from the event.
