The NFL world is in shock after Vontae Davis, the former Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Buffalo Bills cornerback, was found dead in his grandmother’s mansion in Southwest Ranches, Florida on Monday. He was 35.

Davis Found Dead At 35

Daily Mail reported that Davie Police have confirmed that a body was found and an investigation is underway, adding that they do not suspect foul play.

“This morning, Davie Police Officers responded to 6051 SW 178th Avenue in reference to a medical call,” police said in a statement. “Officers were called to the residence by the house assistant, who found the homeowner deceased.”

“We can confirm that the deceased individual is Vontae Davis age 35,” they continued. “Preliminary information suggests that foul play is not involved. The investigation remains active.”

Though police refer to Davis as the owner of the home, records show that the property is registered in his grandmother’s name.

“We are heartbroken by the sudden passing of former Dolphins CB Vontae Davis and extend our deepest condolences to his family & loved ones during this difficult time,” the Miami Dolphins posted on social media.

The NFL added they are “heartbroken to hear about the passing of Vontae Davis. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

Bobby Maze, Davis’ childhood best friend, also posted an emotional tribute to him on social media.

“To my childhood friend and to my brother Vontae Davis rest in peace,” Maze writes. “No words can explain how I feel right now.”

“You was one of a kind and so full of life. Life will never be the same without my brother,” he continued. “Them FaceTime calls etc damn I wish we could have one more convo. You beat the odds, you made it, you did it your way, it just wasn’t supposed to end like this.”

Davis’ History

Davis had somewhat of a troubled history. Just one year before his death, he was found curled up asleep on the side of a highway after crashing his Tesla into another vehicle in South Florida. Shocking photos showed him with his arms under his head as the wreckage of two cars were next to him.

Witnesses said that Davis stayed asleep as first responders frantically moved around him, and that he only woke up when police put him in a police car. Even then, he had difficulty staying awake and eventually fell asleep again in the police vehicle.

“Your eyes are bloodshot,” police told Davis at the time. “Your speech is slurred. You can barely stay awake. All right? You almost killed somebody.”

When asked if he’d consumed alcohol, Davis replied, “‘Yes, I had two drinks. Two mixed drinks.”

In November of 2023, Davis cut a plea deal with prosecutors in Broward County in which he admitted that he drove his vehicle under the influence. He was consequently ordered to complete 50 hours of community service and to pay fines and fees to cover the medical bills for anyone injured in the crash.

In happier times, Davis was the 25th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and played until 2018, when he suddenly retired in the middle of a Bills game against the Los Angeles Chargers. During the 121 NFL games that he played in during his career, Davis had 22 interceptions and 395 tackles, according to Fox News. He was also named to the Pro Bowl while with the Colts in 2014 and 2015.

Davis is the younger brother of Super Bowl winner Vernon Davis, who survives him. Please say a prayer for Davis’ loved ones during this tragic time.
